Zeta Phi Beta Sorority was founded on the simple belief that sorority elitism and socializing should not overshadow the real mission for progressive organizations - to address societal mores, ills, prejudices, poverty, and health concerns of the day. On January 16, 1920, Zeta began as an idea conceived by five coeds at Howard University in Washington D.C.: Triumphant Founder Arizona Cleaver Stemons, Triumphant Founder Pearl Anna Neal, Triumphant Founder Viola Tyler Goings, Triumphant Founder Myrtle Tyler Faithful, and Triumphant Founder Fannie Pettie Watts. These five women dared to depart from the traditional coalitions for black women and sought to establish a new organization predicated on the precepts of Scholarship, Service, Sisterhood, and Finer Womanhood.
The Sorority has chartered hundreds of chapters in the US, Caribbean, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Africa and has initiated more than 125,000 women. Zeta‘s national and local programs include the endowment of its National Educational Foundation, community outreach services and support of multiple affiliate organizations, such as the March of Dimes and the American Heart Association. Zeta chapters and auxiliaries have given untotaled hours of voluntary service to educate the public, assist youth, provide scholarships, support organized charities, and promote legislation for social and civic change.
Since its inception, the Sorority has chronicled a number of firsts. Zeta Phi Beta was the first Greek-letter organization to charter a chapter in Africa (1948); to form adult (Zeta Amicae) and youth auxiliary (Archonettes, Amicettes, and Pearlettes) groups; to centralize its operations in a national headquarters; and to be constitutionally bound to a fraternity, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated.
As the Sorority moves toward its centennial, it retains its original zest for excellence. It espouses the highest academic ideals and that has resulted in its members serving in groundbreaking roles in all fields of endeavor. Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. is poised for perpetual service to mankind into her second century and beyond.
